South Rim days start well from Montrose.
The South Rim is the park’s most accessible side, reached from US-50 east of Montrose via CO-347. It has the visitor center, paved park roads, overlooks, trails and seasonal ranger programs. North Rim access is entirely different—do not let a map app blur the two.
A simple day plan
- Start unhurried.Breakfast at the cabin, water bottles filled and layers packed.
- Choose two anchors. One primary activity plus time to wander beats rushing through a checklist.
- Come home well.Make dinner together, let the kids play and watch the last light from the deck.
